Wedding Tips, Facts & Fun – Choosing your Wedding Dress

Posted by Emma ♥ - June 27th, 2011

Buying your wedding dress can seem very overwhelming, with so much on offer for you to choose from it can become a headache when it should be one of the best parts of wedding planning.

We have a few tips to help you make shopping for your dress an enjoyable experience.

- you generally need to order your dress 6 months before your wedding day, so start shopping around for your dress around 9/10 months before your wedding day.

- have a think about what you are looking for and what your budget is before you hit the shops. This will cut down on the amount of dresses that you will have to try on.

- think about what you will be comfortable in and will suit your wedding, you may be get married abroad somewhere hot so a full on layed dress maybe might not be the most practical so look at light/flowing materials.

- take along someone who wll give you their honest opinion and not just say what they think you want to hear. You don’t want someone with you who discounts dresses as it is not their cup of tea.

Above all have FUN!!! Try on lots until you find the one and don’t settle on something that you are not sure off.

Make a day of it, split up all that trying on with a nice lunch out. You could make it a day with your bridesmaid and have them come along with you so they can try on bridesmaid dresses too.

One last thing make sure you pick a dress that you adore and that you feel 100 % comfortable .

If you have any dress tips that you would like to share then please feel free to leave them in the comments box.

Wedding Tips, Facts & Fun – Wedding Superstitions

There are many things that couples automatically assume are the ‘done thing’ or traditional when planning their wedding, but do we really know why we do them?

Many of these traditions go back centuries and in today’s world do not have much meaning but are still followed by couples all over the world. So today we decided to take a look at some of these traditions and their meanings….

Most weddings take place on Saturday nowadays but in the past Saturday’s were considered to be an unlucky day to get married.

Monday for wealth
Tuesday for health
Wednesday the best day of all
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses
Saturday for no luck at all

Before the white wedding dress was made popular by Queen Victoria, brides would wear their best dress to get married in. White is often the choice of brides, it is believed a white wedding dress symbolises maidenhood.

Married in White, you have chosen right,
Married in Blue, your love will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Brown, you will live in town,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.

Bridesmaids were dressed in a similar way to the bride to confuse evil spirits.

The wearing or the veil is was also to warn off evil spirits, this was the believe of roman brides. In the eighteen hundreds the veil became popular in Britain where it is associated with modesty and chastity.

One other tradition that is observed by brides around the world is -

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in your shoe

Although some of the customs go back centuries this rhyme comes from Victorian times.

Something old – This represents the bride and grooms old friends who they hope will still remain close after marriage.
Something new – symbolises the newlyweds’ happy and prosperous future
Something borrowed – This is often leant to the bride by a member of her family and is usually of great value, this must be returned to the lender to bring the bride good luck.
Something blue – This originated in ancient Israel where the bride wore a blue ribbon in her hair to represent fidelity.

The placing of a sixpence in the brides shoe is to ensure wealth within the marriage. Most brides today will use a penny but have a search on the internet you can find websites that sell sixpences for weddings!

Picking your Bridesmaids

Image: 100 Layer Cake

Well do I have a treat for you!! Seeing as I am 3 days behind (really trying hard to get to grips with ‘Scheduling’ lol!) you will have plenty of reading to catch up with so make sure you come back at 2pm and 5pm (GMT) to catch the rest of today’s posts!

One of the first decisions you will probably make when planning the big day is who will be part of your wedding party – bridesmaids, best man, ushers etc. There are no rules on who you should or should not have or how many (my husband had 3 best men!) but make sure you give it plenty of thought.

One thing that you should consider when picking your bridal party is how reliable they are? When picking you are not only showing people how much you think of them but they will also be helping you with the planning (if you need them to) and helping things run smoothly on the day relieving a lot of the stress from you.

Can you trust your chief bridesmaid to arrange your hen night/weekend? Will they support you during the planning and offer an ear when planning gets too much and you need to vent??

If you pick wisely then your bridal party will be worth their weight in gold!

Wedding Tips, Facts and Fun!

Posted by Emma ♥ - May 23rd, 2011

Welcome to Monday’s Wedding Tips where each week we will be providing you with some great tips to help plan your day!

1. Managing your Budget

One of the first things you should think about when you start to plan your wedding is what your budget will be. Sit down with your Fiance (and your Family too if they are contributing) and work out how much money you have to spend and what your priorities are.

Make a spread sheet, or if you’re anything like myself, use this as a great excuse to buy a new notebook and include EVERYTHING you will be paying out for from the Venue right through to your Favours and allocate a percentage or amount of your budget to each of these.

Do try your hardest to stick to this and remember if you go over in one thing then you will need to knock this off something else – if you REALLY want the Photo Booth at your reception but it puts you over budget on your Photography allocation then maybe reconsider those Louboutin’s – The high street stores have fantastic alternatives saving you £/$’s (some fab examples coming up later this afternoon for you!)
