Sunset Vigil

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We’ve all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who’s set to fly

The eulogy’s read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO’s done
What kind of soldier they’d become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute’s silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

I can’t even begin to express my sadness at hearing the tragic news that 6 of our brave men were killed yesterday in one of the worst losses we’ve experienced since 2006.

My thoughts immediately turned to their family and friends and to all their fellow servicemen and women currently serving with them – it just doesn’t bear thinking about what these people are going through at the moment.

As a mark of respect today there will be no posts – our usual Thursday posts have been rescheduled for Saturday (9am & 12pm).

Hey lovelies,

Just a quick note from me to say that I will be out of the office for a week from today. Well I’m hoping to be anyway!

At the time of writing this heavy snow is forecast for most of the UK late Saturday/early Sunday and I am due to fly to Tenerife on Sunday morning at 7am so keep your fingers crossed for me otherwise you might see me again tomorrow lol!

Welcome to 2012 peeps and what a good one this looks set to be!

I am feeling so fresh and raring to go after a nice extended Christmas break. It is the first chance I’ve had all year to take any time off and it really has done me the world of good!

The picture above is basically my News Years Resolution and this year I am determined to stick to it. I am going to Do Better by ensuring that I post at least once a day (this will be increasing though – more to come in a bit!) and complete my daily ‘To Do List’, I am going to Get Better by planning my work day carefully and ensuring that I take off one day a week (although it may be a half day to start with!) and Be Better by eating and exercising more and just generally looking after myself.  Taking a walk at lunchtime (or actually having a lunchtime would be a good start!) and a little time out for pampering too!

Although I haven’t posted much since new year, I have been working on lots of new exciting plans for this little site and I just can’t wait to get stuck in now!! 2012 is already looking like a fab year and we are only 9 days in!

There are five new changes to take place on MWD over the coming weeks so everyday this week I will be revealing one of them to you – I have to do it  this way otherwise today’s post would be HUGE and I don’t want to bore you before I’ve even started!

2012 update 1: Facelift
(for the site of course not me – although some would argue that I may need one just as much!)

Our logo will remain the same but I just want to make things look prettier and a little more user friendly too. I don’t want to give too much away right now but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s going to look blooming fab!

I think I have pretty much got everything covered with what needs improving, however, I am always open to suggestions and would love to hear from you if there is anything you would like to see changed/tweaked on the site – email me at emma@militaryweddingdiscounts.com.

Another little thing to announce today is that I will also be taking part in the 365 Days of Sunshine project as inspired by the lovely Leah from Golden Apple Designs and Kelly from Boho Events - This will be on the site each afternoon (5.00pm GMT) starting from today where you will be treated to a backdated 9 days! This is just a bit of fun but something that I think will really help to actually take notice of what happens on a daily basis. It’s so easy to get absorbed in the daily routine and before you know it a week has passed and you barely even noticed. By doing the 365 Days of Sunshine project, it has made me pay much more attention to what was happening in my day and appreciate it alot more so thanks so much to Leah & Kelly for the inspiration!

I know I’m a little premature in posting this but I thought it would be nice to start our celebrations early here on MWD as the bells strike for 2012 in Afghanistan a little before us at 19.30pm (GMT). It would be lovely if we could spare all our service men & women a thought at this time (wherever they may be!) and raise a glass to toast them all a safe new year. We are eternally grateful to you all for the wonderful work you do and are forever in our thoughts!

I’d also like to take this chance to say a HUGE thank you to all our readers and advertisers for the amazing support you have given us since we launched in July 2011! I am really looking forward to the year ahead and will be filling you in shortly on all the exciting plans we have for next year.

It’s nearly Christmas (excited much – YAY!!!) and the festive celebrations start tomorrow (12th Dec) at Military Wedding Discounts!

Having spent weeks trying to think of what I could do to inject a bit of Christmas spirit to the site, I decided it would be great for the readers to find out a little more about how MWD’s lovely advertisers, the people who provide you with the VERY generous discounts,  are going to be spending Christmas this year and what tops their wish list!

It’s that time of year where we’re all reflecting on the past 12 months and looking towards what we want to achieve for 2012!

I have noticed many sites recently doing  ‘Reader Surveys’ but still being a baby in this market I don’t think the timing is right for me to introduce one of these just yet but that doesn’t mean to say that I don’t value your opinions!

I have spent much of the last month working out my plans for next year and guys, it’s gonna be a good one! There are so many exciting new additions to the site (first of which launches in January!) but I want to make sure I am giving you what YOU want!

There will be LOTS more ‘Real Wedding’ features, guest posters, and next year we will be focusing a lot of our time on fundraising for the charities too.

When I first launched MWD back in July, never in a million years would I have predicted it would receive the support and following that it does today! Don’t get me wrong, I DREAMED it would and I wanted it to be the best it possibly could be but it has just exceeded all expectations. It’s been amazing!

So, from you I would like suggestions/comments on how to improve the site and what you want to see more/less of!! I can’t guarantee that I will be able to implement each suggestion but I want to know what you think so email me at emma@militaryweddingdiscounts.com
